Cat Curiosities

As any pet owner knows, cats are curious creatures. But cats themselves are full of curiosities that have fascinated humans for thousands of years.

It was originally thought that the domestic cat evolved 4,000 years ago in Ancient Egypt, where cats were worshiped as gods and domesticated. But it appears that sometime before that, the original wildcat Felis Silvestrus, split into a sub-species known as Felis Catus, from which all domesticated cats of today are descended.

However, Man’s relationship with cats pre-dates even the Egyptians. A grave uncovered in Cyprus, and dated nearly 10,000 years ago, revealed the remains of a human and cat, in the same stage of preservation with their bodies placed only 16 inches apart. Pet or worship? It was impossible to tell, but the cat whose age was estimated at eight months old, showed no signs of violence on its body and was thought to have been particularly treasured by the deceased.

And so it has remained in the thousands of years since. For all its vaunted aloofness, the cat is one of the most loved and loving pets to form a bond with Man...and Woman!
